Artist Statement
As contemporary art transitions into fourth-wave feminism, women are changing their portrayal in animations and in self-portraits. Characters of women are now presented as main protagonists in films, hold characteristics of strong leaders, claim their independence, become culturally aware and empower others. Through the reanalysis of aesthetics questions by feminists the question of what a woman should be and how she/they should act like in 2019 is still forming.
When working in rotoscoping and self-portraits, they display a conflict that illustrates issues for current women, who they are and how they fit in contemporary society. Rotoscoping creates motifs and through flat color, shapes of animals and or lines describes such tangible attitudes and conflicts for women, something current women animators are emulating. While the self-portraits use flower language depicting the strengthens and struggles of women today by using oil paint and layered textures with their own meanings. Through their depictions of realism in both the painting and animation, the symbols these characters create remove the status quo through each character’s reactions and poses.
In the past a majority of people feel conflicted and assimilate to feminine stereotypes, nowadays this is no longer the case. More people are realizing, what being empowered means: standing up for what you believe in and others equally; having an opinion different from your peers is acceptable; without dismissing the person; and rejecting stereotypical gender roles. Madeleine Albright once stated: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other,”which she meant this as a poke for voters who only support certain groups that only benefit one group above the rest while the work is meant to embrace all people. This led to exploration of understanding why people of all genders and races fail to unite and listen to one another, especially given recent tensions. My work is a creative exploration of constantly breaking clichés of women archetypes in animations and in paintings to promote cultural paradigm shifts.
